FLEER COLLEGE GREATS OF THE GAME BASKETBALL
Fleer Gives Collectors a Glimpse of the Past by Honoring the
Greatest College Hoopsters of All-Time in all-new set
MT. LAUREL, N.J. - AUG. 8, 2001 - College basketball enthusiasts and collectors who have dreamed of seeing all of their favorite collegiate heroes together in one set can look no further than to the premiere of Fleer College Greats of the Game Basketball.
Fleer has reached into the past to offer collectors many of the top college players from the past 75 years in many diverse cards. The set incorporates household names such as Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul Jabaar, Wilt Chamberlain, John Havlicek, John Wooden, Vince Carter and many more.
College Greats of the Game Basketball also offers fans and collectors a unique look back at the players who helped define the traditions of U.C.L.A., University of North Carolina, Kansas University, Indiana University, University of Kentucky, and many more historic basketball programs.
"There's never before been a complete set devoted solely to the greatest collegiate basketball players of all time," said Jim Stefano, Senior Director of Product Development. "We are sure collectors will appreciate the great deal of research that Fleer did to produce one of our most comprehensive sets ever."
Fleer College Greats of
the Game Basketball releases in September in 5-card packs for $5.99 (SRP).
The set also pays homage to some of the greatest lady hoopsters of all time in a great subset called Queens of the Court. Legendary college players such as Cheryl Miller, Nancy Lieberman-Kline, Sheryl Swoopes and more are sure to satisfy every collector.
While collectors can find all their favorite heroes in their collegiate uniforms in the base set, the set would not be complete without the perfect compliment of autographs and authentic game used memorabilia.
With Gold Bordered Autographs, collectors can find the John Hancock's of legends like Larry Bird, Kareem-Abdul Jabaar, Jerry West, John Wooden, John Havlicek, Vince Carter, Bob Cousy, Hakeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas and more.
Also look for special Feel the Game Classic cards featuring actual game-used jerseys, basketballs, and other memorabilia from top players and coaches in the history of College hoops. Look for college game-used cards of Larry Bird (Indiana State University), Vince Carter (University of North Carolina), the late great "Pistol" Pete Maravich (LSU), Coach Bob Knight (Indiana University), Bill Walton (UCLA) and more.
The second memorabilia set is called Hardwood Greats and features actual floor pieces from several different college basketball arenas matched up with top names who have shined on that court. Included are floors from University of North Carolina, Indiana University and the 1996 Final Four Court from the Meadowlands where the University of Kentucky defeated Syracuse University.
The set also contains three highly collectible insert sets that are sure to raise more than a few eyebrows. The first insert is called the All-American Collection featuring players who were selected as All-Americans during their college years. Stars such as Jerry West (University of West Virginia), Steve Alford (Indiana University) and Bob Cousy (Holy Cross) are a few included in the set.
The next insert set called Coach's Corner is a set that pays homage to some of the greatest coaches to walk the court. Coaching legends such as Adolph Rupp (University of Kentucky), Dean Smith (UNC), John Wooden (U.C.L.A.) and Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) are only a handful of coaches that collectors can find. All Coach's Corner autographed cards are serially numbered to just 100 apiece.
The last insert is one that is extremely special and is called Player of the Year. The Player of the Year award is given yearly to the college player that stood out among the rest when it came to play on the court. Some of these Player of the Year award winners are Larry Bird (Indiana State), Bill Walton (U.C.L.A.), Danny Manning (Kansas University), David Robinson (Navy) and many more. The All-American and Player of the Year cards are numbered to the last two digits of the year of achievement (1962 = 62).
