Stadium Tour Caps off National Baseball Card Flipping Challenges
MT. LAUREL, N.J. - AUG. 8, 2001 - This past summer over 500 hobby shops across the country participated in the Fleer Card Flipping Challenge, a program that has been largely expanded over the past few years. Hobby shops received an official Fleer card flipping kit that included plenty of card flipping materials such as Fleer cards, prizes, and of course, the rules to the game.
After local winners were announced Fleer's 2001 Baseball Card Flipping Challenge hit the road all summer long on a nationwide stadium tour, which started on July 17 at ProPlayer Stadium (Florida Marlins) and will end at Shea Stadium (New York Mets) on August 29. Hundreds of children have come out for the events to participate in the old age tradition of card flipping and to attend a MLB game.
"Programs like the Fleer Card Flipping tournaments are important because they introduce thousands of kids across the country to the fun of baseball card collecting," said Colin Hagen, Group Licensing Director, Collectibles, for Major League Baseball Properties. "The fact that Fleer has decided to expand the scope of this program in 2001 shows that baseball card collecting continues to be a popular hobby with kids."
Fleer and Major League Baseball brought the grand event to Bank One Ballpark (Arizona Diamondbacks), Shea Stadium (New York Mets), Dodger Stadium (Los Angeles Dodgers), Cinergy Field (Cincinnati Reds), Busch Stadium (St. Louis Cardinals), ProPlayer Stadium (Florida Marlins), PNC Park (Pittsburgh Pirates), Enron Field (Houston Astros) and Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers). The last stop will be Shea Stadium (New York Mets).
Tons of prizes were awarded at the stadium events including Fleer t-shirts, insert cards, uncut sheets, baseball cards and more. Card flipping finalists took home autographed baseballs and the grand prizewinner went away with an autographed baseball glove and four tickets to a future MLB game. Everyone who participated received a prize as well as free tickets to the game.
"The entire card flipping program was a huge success all summer long," said Fleer spokesman Joshua Perlman. "The card flipping challenges have been very exciting, especially with the enthusiasm from the kids, their parents, and the dealers who have participated."
Fleer Trading Cards would like to thank Major League Baseball and all of the teams participating in these card-flipping events. See you next summer!
