Be A Player Gets Jagr in a Caps Uniform

2001-2002 Be A Player Memorabilia Series the first hockey card set
to feature Jaromir Jagr as a Washington Capital

(Toronto, ON; August 10):

In the Game, Inc., the manufacturers of the Be A Player brands of hockey cards, has announced their 2001-02 Be A Player Memorabilia Series will include a base card of Jaromir Jagr pictured in his new Washington Capitals jersey.

The card in question is #129 from the 300-card base set. In the Game was able to acquire a photo from the summer press conference introducing Jagr to Washington fans. That photo replaced the original shot showing Jagr in a Pittsburgh uniform, literally just hours before the cards were printed.

The five-time scoring champion and seven-time NHL All-Star was acquired by Washington from the Pittsburgh Penguins along with Frantisek Kucera in exchange for three top prospects including Kris Beech on July 11, 2001.

The photo on the card front shows Jagr in Washington¹s home jersey looking over his shoulder towards the camera. The Capitals¹ logo is featured prominently in the background. The back of the card features a second similar pose except Jagr is outdoors and is wearing Washington¹s dark road jersey. The bio on the card back has been re-written to reflect the big trade.

The Be A Player Memorabilia set is the first to depict Jagr as a Capital. Early season card releases from other manufacturers still feature him in his Penguins uniform.

³Even though we had to patch a piece of film to get the Jagr card printed, we felt that it was worthwhile,² said Dr. Brian H. Price, President of In the Game, Inc. ³He is such an impact player, when we were told a photo was available, we moved quickly to make it happen.²

The Be A Player Memorabilia Series is scheduled for release on August 22. In addition to the 300-card base set, the product features 13 different insert sets, all of which are memorabilia cards sporting pieces of game-used jerseys and equipment. There will be one of these memorabilia cards in each sealed box. The stated production run for all the memorabilia cards is no greater than 100 and many have been produced in substantially lower quantities.

In the Game, Inc. has produced the Be A Player brands of hockey trading cards since 1998-99 including the Memorabilia Series, the Signature Series, and the Ultimate Memorabilia Series. The company will be issuing six different brands of cards for 2000-01. In addition to the three above-mentioned products, they will also produce an Update Series, bring back the old Parkhurst brand, and release a new set focusing entirely on goalies entitled Between the Pipes.
